  • This is a 10 Week Summer Internship Program starting on May 26, 2026 and ending July 31, 2026.
  • CSX provides optional intern housing for the duration of the 10-week program, as long as the selected intern meets eligibility criteria

Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated Mechanical Engineering Intern to support the maintenance, repair, and performance optimization of industrial equipment. This internship offers hands-on experience in developing preventive maintenance strategies, troubleshooting equipment issues, and analyzing data to enhance operational reliability and reduce downtime. The role is ideal for a student pursuing a degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering, eager to apply their academic knowledge in a real-world industrial setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing and implementing preventive maintenance strategies to ensure equipment reliability and performance.
  • Support troubleshooting of equipment failures, helping identify root causes and assisting with repairs to minimize downtime.
  • Collect and analyze equipment performance data to support recommendations for improving operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers and maintenance teams on equipment repairs, upgrades, and installations.
  • Document maintenance activities, equipment performance, and repair logs to support operational reporting.
  • Follow safety protocols and industry standards during all maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute ideas for improving maintenance processes and equipment performance.
  • Assist in creating maintenance schedules and procedures under the guidance of experienced engineers.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s degree program in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
  • Cumulative minimum GPA of 3.0 (based on a 4-point scale)

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Anticipated graduation within a year after the end of the internship
  • Cumulative minimum GPA of 3.25 (based on a 4-point scale)

Experience: 

  • No prior professional experience required; coursework, projects, or prior internships in mechanical systems or equipment maintenance are a plus.

Technical Skills:

  • Basic understanding of mechanical systems and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn preventive maintenance tools and processes.
  • Exposure to data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, MATLAB, or CMMS) is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of mechanical design principles or industrial equipment operation is a plus.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong problem-solving skills and eagerness to learn.
  • Good communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to safety and quality.

Availability: 

  • Ability to commit to 10 weeks for a full-time internship (May 26, 2026 - July 31, 2026)
